Ethiopia – The People, Priests, and The Eighth Wonder of the World

The children were as fascinated interacting with my tour group, as we were with them. After photographing their curious faces, I immediately showed them their images taken with my digital camera. They was amazed with the technology. I just made life long friends!

The children were as fascinated interacting with my tour group, as we were with them. After photographing their curious faces, I immediately showed them their images taken with my digital camera. They was amazed with the technology. I just made life long friends!

In a mountainous region in the heart of Ethiopia, eleven medieval monolithic churches were carved out of rock. Their building is attributed to King Lalibela who set out to construct in the 12th century a ‘New Jerusalem’, after Muslim conquests halted Christian pilgrimages to the holy Land.

This priest gladly welcomed my tour group to explore this rock cave church and snap photos of him after we gave a monetary offering honoring this holy landmark.

St. George's Cathedral, one of Addis Ababas fine Ethiopian Orthodox churches. This catherdral is where Haile Selassie was crowned emperor. Here, a tour guide demonstrates how to beat this enormous drum.

Shown is a fresco inside St. George's Church in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia. Built in 1896 in the traditional octagonal shape by the Emperor Menelik II to commemorate his victory at Adwa, St. George's Church is dedicated to the national saint of Ethiopia. It attracts tens of thousands of tourists from home and abroad.
